Haiti to the World

Part of me died this week.

The devastating earthquake that occurred in Haiti has touched me dearly. As a Caribbean native, I feel  for the Haitian people but also for my friends that are directly affected by this catastrophe. Boston has a large Haitian population and the city is in mourning. The tragedy brought me back to the Tsunami in Indonesia and the 9/11 attacks.I cannot begin to fathom the hurt and suffering that the victims’ families might be facing. The feeling of “not knowing” whether your family member is still alive is the worst feeling anyone can endure.

One of my best friends is unaware if her grandmother is alive and some of my closest friends have already confirmed the death of their family members. It is a sad week for the world and I am somewhat afraid of how the rest of the year will turn out.

But despite this horrible event, IGNORANCE seems to lurk its ugly head once again. A friend of mine told me that people were complaining on Facebook and posting tabs on people’s walls saying that Americans should worry about Americans and Haiti was too much of a poor country  to care about. That sickened me and realized the immoral reality we are in. People are unwilling to set aside their differences even in time of mourning. There should be a call for sympathy. This is the best time for humanity to collectively unite and lend a helping hand.

I found this YouTube Video that I just had to share. It is a response to Rush Limbaugh and Pat Robertson’s lack of morals and humanity. Some people appreciated Keith Olbermann’s comment while others called it an attack on conservatives.

Wyclef Jean is doing an AMAZING job with this relief effort. He posted a statement concerning the devastating event:

President Obama has already said that the U.S. stands ‘ready to assist’ the Haitian people. The U.S. Military is the only group trained and prepared to offer that assistance immediately. They must do so as soon as possible. The international community must also rise to the occasion and help the Haitian people in every way possible.

This is a call for action. Several celebrities including Wyclef, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie have stepped up to the call and are helping. But don’t think that you have to be rich in order to help. One of the easiest way to help is to TEXT “YELE” to 501501, which will donate $5 to the Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund.

If you can afford to have a cellphone, iPhone, iPod, etc, you can afford to donate $5 to these people in need.
